What we found
Undernutrition was five times more common among boys than girls — fifteen cases to three. No pupil presented with an illness needing urgent treatment on the day. Localised skin lesions and probable fungal scalp infections were observed.
One teacher, a woman of 49, had moderately elevated blood pressure. She was counselled and referred to the Primary Health Centre in Kuje, where she lives.

How we measured it
Nutritional status was assessed using BMI-for-Age Z-score, the standard the World Health Organization recommends for school-age children. Exact dates of birth were not on record, so each child's age was taken at the midpoint of their stated year. The figures are a close approximation rather than an exact clinical score.
How it was arranged
A courtesy visit to school leadership in March 2026, clearance from the AMAC Local Education Authority in April, then a pause during a teachers' union strike. The programme resumed after it was resolved, under a new head teacher.
The budget was reduced during planning. Individual clinical consultations were dropped and the team moved to tiered health education with screening — which is how 196 pupils were reached rather than a fraction of them.
