School Health Interventions
Health education, screening and deworming, delivered inside the school day.
What it is
We take a half-day health programme into a primary school: a general assembly for the whole school, then separate sessions by age and sex, then screening and deworming.
The separate sessions matter. What a six-year-old needs to hear about handwashing is not what a twelve-year-old girl needs to hear about her own safety.

How it works

Events

What we found at Toge
Of 195 pupils with complete measurements, 169 had a normal BMI-for-age. Fourteen were thin and four severely thin. Seven were overweight and one obese.
Undernutrition was five times more common among boys than girls — fifteen cases to three. No pupil presented with an illness needing urgent treatment on the day. One teacher was referred for high blood pressure.

How we measured it
Nutritional status was assessed using BMI-for-Age Z-score, the standard the World Health Organization recommends for school-age children.
One limitation is worth stating. Exact dates of birth were not recorded, so each child's age was estimated at the midpoint of their stated year. The figures are a close approximation rather than an exact clinical score, and we are capturing dates of birth from now on.
Consent
Three parents declined deworming for their children. The refusals were recorded and the children were not treated.
